Understand how health affects term life insurance

A quick look at qualifying for term life

Qualifying for term insurance is based on health and health can even affect the rates so it's important to understand the underwriting process.  Let's take a look at term life health classes, the underwriting process, and options available if health is an issue.  First, the health classes.

When you input your information into the term life insurance quote generator, one entry you will notice is the "Health Class".  The other information is pretty self-explanatory but Health Class probably needs some further explanation especially since it can affect your pricing.

As with all things term insurance, we have simplified this entry during the quoting process to four categories:  Best Class, Preferred, Preferred Plus and Standard.  As we discussed in the "Understanding your term life quote" section, it's probably best to be conservative but here are some guidelines for the four classes below.  Keep in mind that these are just guidelines and the carrier's underwriter will make the final determination of eligibility and assigned health class.  Smoking and height/weight will also separately factored into their decision.  Each carrier's requirements differ so these guidelines may not apply to a specific carrier/plan.
